This is the question most owners ask once they are ready to spend on getting found. There is no universally right answer, but there is a clear way to think it through.
The core difference
SEO earns visibility in Google's organic results through your website's content, technical setup and reputation signals. Google Ads pays for placement at the top of results for chosen keywords, charged per click.
Both put you in front of people actively searching. What you pay for is very different.
Speed, cost and control
- Speed: ads can appear the same day, SEO usually takes months to move meaningfully
- Cost: ads scale with clicks and stop the moment you stop paying, SEO costs more upfront and less per visitor once ranking
- Trust: many people scroll past ads, organic placement carries a credibility advantage
- Control: ads give exact keyword, budget and location control, SEO is influenced rather than bought
When to prioritise ads
- You need leads this month, or you are covering a slow season
- You are testing which services and messages actually convert
- Your industry is competitive enough that organic will take a while
- You have a budget you are comfortable spending consistently
When to prioritise SEO
- You are building for the medium to long term
- Budget is tighter and needs to stretch further over time
- Your business runs on trust and reputation, such as trades or health
- You want visibility that does not disappear when spend stops
Doing both
For many small businesses this is the sensible answer. Run ads for immediate, measurable leads while SEO builds underneath, then shift budget as organic takes over. Ad data also tells you which keywords convert, which is useful input for content.
